A shock absorber is used to capture and dissipate the excess energy generated when the vehicle wheel contacts uneven ground. It is an element of the suspension that controls the operation of springs in sprung vehicles, responsible for the absorption of large energy jumps caused by the contact of the wheel with uneven ground. The most dangerous for the suspension and the entire vehicle are sudden wheel runs on unevenness, e.g. a hole in the road, because then the shock absorber must dampen a sudden energy jump located in one point. Its essential role is therefore to collect such energy and then dispersed it evenly to all wheels of the vehicle.

A defective shock absorber will not fulfill its function, and if the energy is not dissipated, not only the driving comfort of the vehicle passengers will suffer, but also other suspension components, such as the swingarm, may be damaged. The safety of traveling with such a vehicle will also drop significantly.
